MARK MAKING WORKSHOP
MAKING YOUR MARK - Ceramic Surface Decoration Techniques
Weekend workshop - Saturday May 15 & Sunday May 16 2021 from 10 am to 4 pm daily
Creating unique and interesting surfaces on your ceramic work can involve a myriad of techniques. This workshop introduces you to a number of ways to “make your mark”, including how to use latex & wax resist methods, sgraffito & mishima mark making, slips, underglazes, potters stains & oxides, brushwork, underglaze pencils, carved surfaces and so much more.
The workshop is perhaps best suited to those who already have some ceramic experience and wish to extend their surface and mark making repertoire. You will be shown how to make and colour your own slips, the use of marking and slip trailing tools, brushwork with oxides, layering of glazes and how to carve the surface of your clay for distinctive outcomes. During the two days of the workshop you will be have the opportunity to practice these techniques on greenware and bisqued forms.
Places are limited to only six students, with information and demonstrations provided by Rowley Drysdale and the other resident artist at Quixotica, Sarah Therese. By the end of the weekend you will have learned multiple new techniques to expand your ceramic outcomes.
Cost - $295 per person. Materials included. Tea and coffee is provided. BYO lunch each day.

Feedback from some of Rowley's other workshops at Quixotica -
I enjoyed watching Rowley throw large objects on the wheel as he generously shared his techniques which have been acquired over many years of doing wheel work. I did find the workshop inspiring. I'm a timid thrower and I gained more confidence to take more risks while throwing and have more faith in my ability to throw large objects. It was very special having lunch on the gallery verandah too.

I particularly enjoyed that there were only 6 in our group.... I am only just a beginner potter. It certainly beats any other classes I have done with an excellent tutor, and with a small group.

I have done a few wheel throwing workshops... and Rowley’s workshop is the FIRST one I have felt catered to my needs as an advanced/intermediate beginner. The goals were achievable while still being challenging. The course content pushed me out of my little world. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt it was very worth my while. Rowley is approachable, accepting of the full range of questions presented to him, and able to explain things in a way that is understandable. His willingness to speak of the challenges he has as a thrower and the mistakes that he has made makes him very relatable. I also enjoyed having access to our own wheel... And the fact that there was a cap on the number of participants was vital to the success of the workshop.

I enjoyed the relaxed and beautiful environment, access to the gallery, and the knowledgeable and understanding teaching style. I was inspired by the demonstrations and being able to see how various forms are thrown.

Thank you for your fantastic workshop, and your kind hospitality … I thought that the whole exercise was brilliant. In addition to the workshop I really liked getting away from it all, and loved the peace and tranquillity of Quixotica….It was interesting observing the care and consideration that Rowley puts into each piece, and at each stage of the process. The facilities are great - a wonderful working environment. The cakes, great coffee and billy tea were all spot on too.
