MAKING YOUR MARK - Ceramic Surface Decoration Techniques
Weekend workshop - Saturday & Sunday - 10 am to 4 pm daily

This workshop has now SOLD OUT. If you would like to be alerted for any new dates for this workshop, please email us by clicking here, and we'll send you an email to let you know when this workshop is scheduled again.

Creating unique and interesting surfaces on your ceramic work can involve a myriad of techniques. This workshop introduces you to a number of ways to “make your mark”, including how to use underglazes, imprinting, stamping, stencils, latex resist, sgraffito, oxides, brushwork,  carved surfaces, faceting and so much more.

The workshop is perhaps best suited to those who already have some ceramic experience and wish to extend their surface and mark making repertoire. You will be shown how to use underglazes, marking and slip trailing tools, brushwork with oxides, layering of glazes and how to mark the surface of your clay for distinctive outcomes. During the two days of the workshop you will be have the opportunity to practice these techniques on greenware and bisqued forms.

Places are limited to only six students, with information and demonstrations provided by Rowley Drysdale along with his partner and the other resident artist at Quixotica, Sarah Therese and Toowoomba ceramic artist, Melanie McEvoy. By the end of the weekend you will have learned multiple new techniques from all three to expand your ceramic outcomes.

Cost - $295 per person. Materials included. Tea and coffee is provided. BYO lunch each day.

Feedback from the Mark Making workshop at Quixotica -

Thank you so much for such a wonderful workshop. I really enjoyed all the different techniques that Sarah, Rowley and Mel showed us over the weekend.  This workshop gave me another insight into this wonderful world of pottery. I really liked that we learned three different techniques from different artists/teachers. It gave us enough time and knowledge to understand each technique, but also gave us the opportunity to explore them further in our own time. The workshop was very inspirational for me as it has shown me that you can find inspiration for decoration your own pottery from nature, from your own life story and from the history of different cultures. I particularly enjoyed Rowley’s session when he was also giving us the history of the Oribe technique.

Lucie, Sunshine Coast, Qld – Mark Marking – May 2021

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and encouraging assistance, as well as the opportunity to work with other potters and to see their work.  I learned more about using underglazes and liners. It was also useful to be able to fire selected pieces and be able to see the results the next day. I found Mel's work inspiring in her ability to use design and decoration to tell her personal stories which helped me to think about how to put my personal experiences into my pottery.

I found the workshop very informative and inspiring, so many new ideas. Rowley’s knowledge of clay, components of glazes and history was interesting too. It is a beautiful place. I felt the environment was very good for learning.
