This sculptural art piece was hand carved by Rowley from local clay, then fired in an anagama kiln over several days. Its surface shows markings made by the flame and Rowley, as well as and natural ash glazes.
Rowley describes this unique piece as follows - "This form with its subtle kinetic nature- it rocks slightly- alludes to the observation that while the earth nurtures all that exists, it itself requires nurturing. It may seem impossibly resilient, like the ancient clay used to construct this art work, but it still needs the care and protection we typically deliver to any life form which might be placed in a cradle.
The surface markings suggest fault lines, pathways and portals which characterize both earth’s essential nature and the type of perspectives required to keep it in good health."
Please note that this piece is part of Rowley’s current exhibition, “Extracts”, at the Noosa Regional Gallery. It will be available for collection or delivery after the end of the exhibition on November 7, 2020.
Dimensions: 43 cm wide x 31 cm deep x 13 cm high
