Reef & Sky - Dragon eye cylinder 3

Reef & Sky - Dragon eye cylinder 3

These cylinders were wheel thrown by Rowley from porcelain in his studio at Quixotica. These simple shapes were bisque fired then glazed with cobalt, iron & ash glazes.

After glazing, the cylinders were then placed on their sides on sea shells in one of the anagama kilns at Quixotica, and wood fired over several days and nights.  The glaze runs occur when the firing process melts the glaze at temperatures over 1300 degrees Celsius.  Sometimes the glaze coagulates to form a globule called a  "dragon eye" or "dragonfly eye." You can see these drips (or "dragon eyes") along the length of the cylinder.

The resulting pieces have impactful glaze and shell markings, with glaze drips forming the feature of each piece, They also make beautiful vessels for flowers, long stems and delicate branches.

Please note that this piece is part of Rowley’s current exhibition, “Extracts”, at the Noosa Regional Gallery. It will be available for collection or delivery after the end of the exhibition on November 7, 2020.

Cylinder 3 - 13 cm diameter x 44 cm high
